Berlin (and Germany itself) has not been politically divided into "east and west" for nearly 20 years. "East Germany" ceased to exist in 1990. Since then, all of Germany has been under one government.
West Berlin was democratic, controlled by West Germany. East Berlin was Communist, controlled by the Soviets and East Germany. Just to be confusing..... East Germany was called the GDR, the German Democratic Republic. It was that in name, it was not that in actual fact !
The Berlin Wall
Despite West Berlin being poorer, it wasn't really in the war. It was with the Allies in the war, and other foreign armies simply went without objection whereas the East Berlin was against the Allies and was constantly being bombed. Life was also much harsher there. Many people wanted to escape. So, the Germans put up the wall, and the West continued while the East was bombed.
People left East Berlin for the freedom of West Germany. While people of all ages fled, many were young and had hopes for brighter futures. It was nearly impossible to do this living in East Germany.
east Germany couldn't get to the freedom of the west because of the Berlin wall
not in very good standing
It's called east is east because the director, producer and writer wanted the global population, not to get confused with east and west, as they are one of the most common mistakes in everyday life, whilst talking compass'. For more information about everyday life confusions, check out my book, now online! It's ironically called: 'Everyday life carries Confusions'

A museum chronicling life in the former East Germany
It was in East Germany, land east of Elba river given to the Russians. Russia thought they could force the Americans, British and French out of West Berlin by imposing a blockade of land vehicles to West Berlin. The USA had a air lift of civilian cargo planes flying from West Germany to West Berlin, around the clock flying needed supplies, and the blockade was defeated. Also, West Berlin showed to East Germans how good life in the West was, so many East Germans fled to West Berlin, until the Russians put a wall around West Berlin in 1961. A wall which did not come down until 1989.

Cold War. The Berlin Wall was put up in 1961 when the World War 2 had ended for 16 years. It was built by the successor of Stalin. This happened because when East Germany surrounded West Berlin, people migrated there for better life. This caused a big blow on their economy and propaganda. Hence the Berlin Wall was built to stop East Germans from entering West Berlin. Those who tried were shot. the Berlin wall was torn down in 1989
Life in East Germany. Founded in July 2006, the museum houses a permanent exhibition: A Hands-on Experience of Everyday Life. This interesting and quirky display focuses on all aspects of the culture and daily life of the former East Germany's citizens, aiming to provide visitors with a full picture of the era. There are documentaries, a replica living room with working TV, and a kitchen where you can even sniff the spice rack! The museum is still sourcing new exhibits, so if you have that elusive DDR toilet seat or telephone box, please do let them know…
Everyday of My Life was created in 1976.
