Darwin's theory was that beneficial traits would be favored in a population by a mechanism called natural selection. Lamarck proposed that acquired traits would be passed on to the offspring. Darwin's theory is favored over Lamarck's because there is no identified mechanism for passing on acquired traits e.g., your baby will not be born with pierced ears even though yours are pierced. In Darwin's theory, the traits that are favorable for an organism offer some adaptive advantage to those members of the population that possess it. Having the advantage allows them to produce more offspring e.g., rabbits range in color from black to white--in a snowy environment, the white ones have the advantage over the darker ones so they breed, well, like rabbits.

Who was scopes and what did they do?

John Thomas Scopes was a high school biology teacher who was accused of teaching evolution in 1925. In the famous Scopes Trail he was found guilty, but the verdict was overturned on a technicality. The trial represents the fight between the creation vs. evolution, led by the fundamentalists and the creationists.

What was the major question of the Scopes trial of 1925?

It was a conflict between the teachings of theology and science. To some people in the early 1900s, the theory of evolution suggested that men were descended from apes (which is erroneous). The term "monkey trial" was applied to the Scopes trial because a teacher was charged with teaching Darwinian evolution in violation of a state law against it. The underlying issue was whether or not a state statute was constitutional or unconstitutional because it made it a criminal offense to teach the theory of evolution, as opposed to the Bible's teaching of the Creation. Scopes was found guilty as charged, but cleared on a technicality. The 1925 law, called the Butler Act, was upheld by the Tennessee Supreme Court but was eventually repealed by the Tennessee legislature in 1967.

What are the differences between Darwin's and lamarcks theory of evolution?

Larmark's theory was based on the idea that organisms inherited characteristics that they had acquired in life - so, if you have a scar your offspring will have scars. Darwin's theory assumed that offspring inherited characteristics from their parents, but they were more likely to survive to breed if there was advantage to those characteristics.
