As a writer, I would define the stages of the writing process as:

  1. daydream or imagine about the topic to get ideas to find a topic or ideas about your position on your topic; let it all stew in your thinking
  2. Create an outline of your major points, down through an A and B item listing for sub-points
  3. Revise your outline to sharpen your thoughts
  4. Write by points and by sections - This is writing freely, without much worrying about finding the correct words, punctuation, etc. Just get the ideas down.
  5. Make sure you use good transitions between points and sections.
  6. Read it out loud - you will hear problems!
  7. Revise globally. Check your major points and supporting sentences.
  8. Revise locally. For example, Google "wordy text" or "wordiness list" and search for and replace those words / phrases in your text. Also, sharpen your transitions between paragraphs and sections.
  9. CUT ! RE-ORGANIZE ! Don't fall so in love with how you wrote it the first time that you can't divorce whole sections that don't really sound right or don't fit. (Move sections to a back-up file in case you want to reuse it somewhere else.)
  10. Let the writing sit and stew again.
  11. Read it out loud again. Read it to someone else. Get feedback.
  12. Revise again.
  13. At some point, let it go. Stop fretting over it. Check your punctuation, capitalization, clarity one more time, but then-- just stop second-guessing yourself.

Lastly, be proud of what you accomplished. It is not easy to share your thoughts about a topic. Sometimes, it is hard work! So give yourself some kuddos for doing it.
