In a five paragraph essay, the first paragraph will be your introduction. The middle three paragraphs will each have a body of evidence to support the introduction. The final paragraph will be your conclusion.

Example

Writing a five paragraph essay is just the same as writing any other type of essay. You will make your point in the same way, and you will write it out in the same way. A five paragraph essay is only different because there is a set number of paragraphs in it.

When you are writing any type of essay, including a five paragraph essay, you should always start by writing a list or outline. This will tell everything that you know (or have looked up!) about the topic. The list or outline will help you to know what you are going to write down in which part of your essay. This step is the same no matter how many paragraphs you are going to write down.

When you write any type of essay, you introduce the main topic of the essay in your first paragraph. Usually, the first sentence is your topic or thesis statement. No matter how many paragraphs you write, you will need an introduction. This will tell your readers what the essay is about.

When you write any type of essay, you need to gather facts to support the topic. If you have written out your list or outline, you only need to make the facts into complete sentences and write them down. Be sure that each supporting paragraph has only one main idea in it; otherwise, the reader might not understand how the paragraph supports your main idea. Whether you have five paragraphs or twenty, you need to use facts to back up your topic.

As you can see, this is a five paragraph essay about five paragraph essays! It should be obvious from reading the three supporting paragraphs that you write any essay in the same way, no matter how many paragraphs you end up with. Writing a five paragraph essay is done in just the same way as writing any other type of essay.

To sum everything up,

  • Your intro should start wide, then narrow down to the three points you are going to be talking about
  • Your three body paragraphs (one for each point) should have at least two supporting facts/details
  • Your conclusion should basically say what the intro said.

Writing prompts are generally quite short, usually a single sentence; certainly not more than a paragraph. Something like, "Write about a scary experience with butterflies." They are intended to prompt you to write something.

If you really meant to ask, "What are the steps in writing five paragraphs in response to a writing prompt?" then the answer is:

  1. Read the writing prompt.
  2. Write five paragraphs about whatever the prompt suggests to you. There is no right answer. It's just intended to give you a starting point. If nobody else, looking at what you wrote, can discern how the prompt is related to what you wrote, that's not a problem.

If you really meant to ask, "How do I create a writing prompt about which someone else can write five paragraphs?" then the answer is, get a book of writing prompts and read those to get an idea how it's done. Generally you want to make it an open question, or not a question but a statement which is maybe ambiguous or suggestive. Don't try to give the writer instructions; just give them a starting point from which they can wander in any direction pleases them.

  1. Pick a topic. If your teacher hasn't given you one, pick something you're interested in or that you like a lot.
  2. Come up with five facts about that topic.
  3. Make a paragraph about each fact, with several sentences talking about the facts.

First, you use your Spell-Check program to learn that the word is WRITE.

Next, you'll have to come up with your own ideas if you want to be a writer. Think of things you are interested in if your teacher has not given you a topic. All writers write about things that interest them. Make a list of whatever you like, then come up with five facts about that thing - make each fact into a paragraph with several sentences about it, and there's your report.
