Although they can fail abruptly the most common symptom you normally see is that when you stop and hold pressure on the brake pedal it will very slowly go down toward the floor. It will not hold steady pressure because the seals are bad. It must be replaced immediately.

Master cyliner may just need adjusting, there is an adjustable rod that goes from the top of the pedal into the master cylinder, this is visible if you open the bonnet (hood) and undo the 6 screws that are on top of the clutch pedal box. Mounted on the upper firewall, driver's side, in front of the brake booster. It will have a reservoir on top that is almost clear plastic that you can see the fluid level through. The Master Cylinder is located right under that reservoir.
