Are all considered the major mountain ranges of Mexico containing the highest peaks.
There are more than two, but the most important include the Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra Madre Occidental mountain ranges.
Actually, there are three of them:
Mexico has four major chains of mountains;
The Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (or Sierra Nevada) runs for 550 miles east-west across central Mexico and contains the eight tallest mountains in Mexico including the 18,490 ft peak of Pico de Orizaba, the highest in Mexico and the third highest in North America.
The Sierra Madre del Sur runs for 600 miles along the south-west coast and contains six of the top 25 mountains in Mexico, including Cerro Nube Flan, the 12th tallest peak at 12,303 ft.
The Sierra Madre Oriental runs for 600 miles down the east coast and contains four of the top 25 mountains, including Cerro San Rafael, the 14th tallest peak at 12,139 ft.
The Sierra Madre Occidental runs for 900 miles from southern Arizona along the west coast of Mexico and includes Cerro Gordo, the 24th tallest peak in Mexico at 10,991 ft.
Three ranges exist: * On the western coast is Sierra Madre Occidental * On the eastern side is Sierra Madre Oriental * and on the southern is Sierra Madre del Sur.
It is the Pico de Orizaba, the seventh tallest mountain in the world, with 5,636 metres (18,490 ft) of height. Coordinates: 19° 1' 48'' N, 97° 16 '12'' W
* Sierra Madre del Sur. * Sierra Madre Oriental. * Sierra Madre Occidental.
Located atop three tectonic plates (North American, Pacific and Cocos Plates), Mexico is one of the most geologically active regions of Earth. This has resulted in a varied topography, which includes the three Sierra Madre mountain ranges, the Mexican Altiplano (or Central Mexican Plateau) and the flat lands of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Following are some of Mexico's most well known mountains:
Sierra Madre Oriental, Sierra Madre Occidental, Sierra Madre del Sur.
You should note however, that these are just the most important, while there are many more smaller mountain ranges such as the Transvolcanic Belt in central Mexico and the Sierra de Baja California, located on the peninsula of the same name.

The Sierra Madre Oriental
The Sierra Madre Occidental is the main mountain range of western Mexico.

It is one of the longest and most important mountain ranges in Mexico, stretching over 1,000 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border southward. The Sierra Madre Occidental is known for its rugged terrain, diverse ecosystems, and rich mineral deposits.
The main mountain range on Mexico's west coast is called the Sierra Madre Occidental. It runs parallel to the Pacific Ocean and spans several states in Mexico.
The Sierra Madre Oriental is the largest mountain range in northeastern Mexico. The Sierra Madres, which means mother mountain range, is made up of several more mountain ranges throughout Mexico, Central America, and the United States.
The main mountain range on Mexico's west coast is the Sierra Madre Occidental range. It extends from close to the northern border southward for over 900 miles.
