Unitary System - This is a system where the central government has all the power and very little power is given to the subunits. Countries like Japan and France practice this type.

Confederation - This is a loose association of states, where very little power is held in the central government. There are very little states which operate under this sort of system.

Then you have Federal - US, Mexico, India and Canada operate under this system. Here we have the central government and the subunits (the states) share power.
