Folk tales, by definition, are stories that have been transmitted orally over many generations.

One of their characteristics is that they are simple. They are simple because they were really meant for children. Since young children can't read, the stories (a) had to be told to them--hence the oral tradition, and (b) they had to be simple.

Another characteristic of folk tales--which also arises from their target audience-- is that they usually have a moral. For example, the story, "Why the Sky is Far Away," has the moral: "Don't be greedy."

Finally, folk tales tend to have a fairy-tale aspect to them. Many of them involve fantastic things happening to fantasy beings in fantasy worlds.
