There are serious problems and challenges facing the Arab world today. They require immediate attention:
1. Global weather change and its impact on the Middle East and North African regions, such as the decreasing rainfall and the problem of desertification.
2. Insufficient food production in all Arab states. They all rely on food import to meet their basic needs.
3. Shortage of fresh water which caused the Middle East to be among the driest regions in the world. More than 2/3 of Arab countries are classified as water poverty stricken.
The Middle East lacks sufficient amounts of water to completely sustain the massive population that now lives there. As a result, each country tries to use more of the water sources than its neighbors and this has resulted in conflict.
Two main reasons for water shortage in the Middle East are that:
1. Most of them are very hot countries and there is at times little rain fall especially in the Arabian Gulf countries where it may rain for a week or so during the course of one year. Sometimes heavily and sometimes not enough. Thus, a scarcity of rain during the year.
2. The region being hot makes people consume far, far more water throughout the day to quench thirst, for more showering and cleaning especially during sand storms. Thus, demand for water increases.
As with most things, it is a source of income and this leads to disagreement between how different groups wish to spend that money.
1. It doesn't rain much there,
2. Much of the landscape is desertified (few or no trees or bushes), so that rain runs off quickly, and sand doesn't retain water for long either.
Saudia Arabia is one, but there are many more.
Most of the water in the Middle East is used for agriculture. However, this is not unique to the Middle East; across the world, the largest consumer of water is agriculture.

There really are no solutions that will make everyonehappy.
Desalination is really the only effective way to increase the amount of freshwater in the Middle East.

One of the two reason for water shortages in the middle east is fast evaporation. When it rains water evaporates quicker here then it does in most other places. Another reason is that the middle east get many droughts.
