It's called a 'grave trap.' They are usually 5' in height and allowed dramatic entrances during theatrical plays. The trap was also called 'Hell' and was taken from the term 'hell mouth'. Actors that were to make ghostly or horrific sounds often were hidden in the trap called 'Hell.'
