I don't know which station you are watching, but many stations have a "bug," a visual symbol with their call letters and position on the broadcast band-- in Boston, for example, if you are watching channel 4 (WBZ-TV), whether in HD or not, you will see a little logo with WBZ's call letters and the number 4 at the bottom right on the screen. This is to help you remember which station you are watching, in case you are ever asked to fill out a ratings survey. Other than that, I don't know which other kinds of numbers you are asking about, unless it is a station that scrolls the results of Stock Market reports for that day-- CNBC, a business channel on cable, does this.
