Lions, hyenas and jackals are threats to cheetahs. As are wildebeest if a cheetah chooses to hunt them. The Iranian cheetah, also known as the Asiatic cheetah, is threatened by desertification and poaching.
The two biggest threats of the cheetah are low genetic diversity and lion predation. If an indivual cheetah receives a disease the other individuals with the same genes will also get that disease. It is much like the crops of a farmer. If there is little variety one disease can wipeout the whole field. Also a population cannot respond well to change when their gene pool becomes less varied. Lion predation is common among cheetah cubs. Most won't even live to see their first birthday. About 70% are killed by lions.
Loss of habitat, decline in prey, poaching, persecution by livestock farmers, and competition with other large predators in protected areas, threaten the survival of the cheetah throughout its range.
Adult Cheetah's have no natural enemies or predators. They are too fast to be caught by any other animal. However, the youngsters are vulnerable to animals like lions and hyenas.
Apart from this, humans are the biggest threat to cheetahs. Humans have hunted them for centuries almost wiping them out in Asia and driving them to low numbers in Africa.
