1861 the US Civil War begins shortly after the attack on Fort Sumter, South Carolina: The most obvious event of note that occurred in the Battle of Fort Sumter was the first shot fired in the American Civil War. That first shot was fired by Edmund Ruffin, a secessionist "fire eater" from Virginia, who was about 63 or 64 years old.
Another notable event was the launch of the expedition of the Star of the West. The Star of the West was a civilian merchant ship hired by the United States Government when James Buchanan was still the US President. The expedition's mission was to transport supplies and reinforcements to Fort Sumter. The Star of the West reached Charleston Harbor and got attacked by Cadets from the Citadel who were stationed at Morris Island. Then it received fire from Fort Moultrie and was hit twice as it was turning to leave Charleston Harbor. Soon after that, the mission was abandoned, and the Star of the West sailed back to friendly waters. A third event of note would be the first fatalities of the Civil War. During the 100 gun salute to the United States Flag, which was the one conditional requirement of Major Robert Anderson for the Federal withdrawal, a spark caused the explosion of a pile of cartridges killing Private Daniel Hough instantly, and mortally wounding Private Edward Galloway.
Fort Sumter was the beginning of the Civil War. The South fired the first shot and that was when the war began. People had followed the armies with picnic baskets and sat on the hills to watch. When the shooting began, they all left as if they had just remembered that it was a war that was going on.
