She was born Rosa Louise McCauley on February 4th, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. She died on October 24th, 2005. She was married to a barber named Raymond Parks. She registered to vote 3 times and the third time they finally accepted it.

She is most known for her refusal to abide by segregation laws aboard city buses in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955. She was charged under a segregated seating law after she refused to get up so a white man could sit down.

In 1996, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and in 1997 a Congressional Gold Medal as "the Mother of the Modern Day Civil Rights Movement".
