The most obvious failure in American history was the Vietnamese War. After a very long and destructive war, South Vietnam fell to the North, and Vietnam became a communist country, which was what the US was trying to prevent. In general, US foreign policy in the Middle East has not gone well, with many middle eastern countries currently being hostile to the US (Iran in particular) and with an anti-American insurgency still raging in Iraq and Afghanistan. Efforts to make peace between Israel and the Arab world have had only limitted success, and Israel (a staunch US ally) remains under attack. The current state of the US economy (in March 2010) is not healthy, and the current level of the US national debt is clearly excessive. The financial future of the US is seriously in doubt although it would be premature to call it a failure.

Genuine Historians avoid making Historical Judgementsuntil at least 50 to 100 years after the death of a historical leader to avoid any inference of political bias Lincoln can be faulted for his failure to emancipate all slaves the Nixon Administration's abuse of power is still political. Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Policy can be called blatantly wrong and the validity of Reaganomics is free from historical criticism on the basis of politics. The Mexican-American War was obviously unjust but the rightness of the Iraqi War remains in the political arena. The Spanish-American War was wrong for every known reason and the Invasion of Panama is still a political football. Leaving the Gold Standard is a debate-able domestic issue and the Invasion of Grenada is a Hot Potato Issue.

George Washington warned the Nation about foreign alliances.

Jefferson wanted an agrarian society.

What Carter, Regan, George H. W. Bush, Clinton, George W. Bush, and Obama sought on the domestic front will remain politics and not history for a long time to come. Each US President comes in with a certain vision but not all have been proven to be visionaries regarding global or domestic issues. John Kennedy's vision was erased by assasination and Lyndon Johnson's Great Societywas derailed by the Vietnam War.

What were the achievements and failures of Thomas Jefferson's presidency?

A failure in his second term was his weak attack on slavery. He made it illegal to bring any more slaves in. But his attack was very weak because more slaves were smuggled in, and the slaves that were already in America had children which increased the slavery population. :) thnx
