German and Japanese submarines had been linking up in the Indian ocean, and exchanging plans, food stuffs, fresh water, fuel, parts, information, etc. It was the only area of operations that Germany and Japan actually physically did work together, somewhat. However, Rommel and his Afrika Corps, had been trying to secure North Africa, originally to assist Italy in that particular area of operations. And Germany was trying to secure areas near the Black Sea which bordered ASIA MINOR (today's Turkey). And Japan was MOVING WEST towards INDIA. With Germany working in an Easterly fashion, and Japan definitely moving west, a look at the map showed the Middle East oil fields right between them both (the middle east is actually in Southwest Asia, one of the reasons Turkey used to be called ASIA Minor/Occidental means Westener & Oriental means Eastener). Japan was driving hard into India, where they were stopped at the "Battle of Imphal."
