At one point the Muslims had conquered all of Spain except for the northwestern corner, Galicia. The reconquest flowed from there.
Because of the long history of wars and times of peace with the Muslims in Spain, the spanish culture was influenced significantly.
Many spanish words are of Muslim origins. e.g. ojala(pronounced oh-hah-la) in spanish means hopefully, it stems from a Muslim prayer "Oh Allah".
Spanish architecture was influenced by the Muslims. Some, like the famous Alahmbra were even built by the Muslims.
In a less aesthetically pleasing way, the age old conflict has lead to a general distrust of Muslims among most Spaniards, although younger generations seem to be parting from that stigma.
There is a lot more. There are entire books written on the Muslim influence on Spanish culture. Hope that helped a little.
Some people in Spain are still Muslim but the majority are christian. Islam in Spain (Al-Andalus, as it was then known). That was the era of the Golden Age Of Islam, from early 8th century to late 15th century, almost coincidental with Dark Ages in the rest of Europe, when Al-Andalus was the center of global civilization. And the capitol city of Cordoba was Europe's largest - the city of books, of patrons of great literary figures and of people who were explorers of knowledge, and flourishing Islamic civilization. There existed no separation between science, wisdom, and faith; nor was East separated from the West, nor the Muslim from the Jew or the Christian. They also developed the silk industry, to make Al-Andalus one of the major silk manufacturing countries of the medieval world. The Muslims in Spain had amazing Islamic architecture and building. Examples are Al-Hambra in Granada Spain, Basharat Mosque, and the great mosque of Cordoba still present today. There is still mosques and the building Muslims built. Most notably in southern Spain.
The Muslims brought peace, stability, science, medicine, sanitation, enlightenment, religious tolerance, art, philosophy, literature and a whole host of other things.
Spain was the most civilized country in Europe and enjoyed peace, justice, and tolerance.
