Roman legions used the skills of their soldiers who were engineers to build siege towers and maintain the artillery capabilities of the legions.
The artillery consisted of catapults which had the capability to launch rocks and burning wood. These would be hurled at the walls of a city or fort under siege. The engineers also maintained huge sling weapons that could launch large arrow like weapons into the enemy's front lines.
