Ferns are generally found in shaded and sheltered environments although some are adapted to slightly more harsher conditions.

A large part of the ferns reproductive cycle involves damp, moist (even wet) conditions, hence the tendency for them to be found in these places.

Ferns are fairly well adapted and can grow in soil, tree trunks and even in the canopies of trees; they normally thrive in semi-shade and high humidity.
