Apart from taking part in a number of other battles, in the Civil War, Burnside is remembered most for leading the Army of Potomac. He replaced McClellan as the commander of this army and led them through the Battle of Fredericksburg. This battle was a loss for the Union. After loosing two important battles, Burnside Resigned and became the General of the Army Of Ohio.

He was regarded as a failure because of his doomed attack on the heights of Fredericksburg.

This might have succeeded a few days earlier, but his pontoons had gone missing and by the time they arrived, Lee had had time to man the heights. Burnside did not have the mental agility to alter his plans, so he must take the blame.

This was followed by an attempted flanking movement that might also have succeeded, but it was rained out, and derisively called the 'Mud March'.

Later, during the Overland campaign, he was stuck with the blame for the failure of the Battle of the Crater, which was none of his doing. (Grant should have taken the blame.)

It is possible to see Burnside an as unlucky General. He was also one of the most decent and honourable men in high command in the war.

He got the blame for the disastrous Battle of the Crater at Petersburg, which was none of his fault whatever.

His only blunder was to launch the attack at Fredericksburg after Lee had manned the heights. The plan had originally been quite sound, but it was delayed when the pontoons he needed to cross the river went astray. He still went ahead with it, and took terrible losses.

After that, he tried to outflank Lee, but he was defeated by the weather. The 'Mud March' made him look silly, but this also was not his fault.

Union Major General Ambrose Burnside was an important general in the Union's war effort. At one time US President Lincoln appointed him to replace General George B. McClellan as the commander of the Army of the Potomac. Lincoln did have to replace Burnside, however, after the Battle of Fredericksburg in December of 1862. The Union lost a key battle on its way to assault Richmond.

Unfortunately Union Major General Ambrose E. Burnside made some serious blunders in the US Civil War. He also had successes for the Union's war efforts, which should not be ignored.Nevertheless, on an overall basis, General Burnside's errors far out weighed his successes. Perhaps his loss at Fredericksburg was the most costly, however, attempts by some to absolve him in a series of errors made in the Burnside Mine attack in 1864 cannot be ignored.

During the Siege of Petersburg, Burnside was under the Command of General Sheridan who was under the command of US Grant. A key part of the Burnside Mine attack, which was designed to destroy Confederate fortifications, was to fill in the eight foot trench, created by the Union.

By doing so, it would allow a full frontal assault by Northern forces to run through the opening made by a huge underground bomb explosion. For some reason, this key element of the assault was overlooked. Eyebrows were raised in that the trench was free from Confederate fire and nothing prevented the trench from being filled.

Burnside takes the blame for not filling the trench, forcing his troops to climb down their own trench and then climb out of it to resume the assault. This totally wrecked one of the key elements of the assault.

Other orders were also ignored by Burnside, but the "trench" issue would haunt him for the rest of his career.

The Fredericksburg blunder that General Ambrose Burnside made at the city of the same name was not entirely his fault. No one has absolved President Lincoln from his telegraph to Burnside ordering his to use a series of frontal assaults in an attempt to dislodge Lee from his fortified positions on the bluff overlooking Fredericksburg and the Confederate wall beneath the bluff. His officers pleaded with Burnside to halt the attacks and if done so, Lincoln surely would have understood. However, Burnside did not wire Lincoln that more than one or two assaults were all his army could bear. From that point on the 10 or more assaults were Burnside's fault. Lincoln relieved Burnside from the command of the Army of the Potomac shortly afterwards.

Major General Ambrose Burnside participated in the entire US Civil War. Perhaps his notable accomplishments were his amphibious landing on Roanoke Island and his operations in the Western Theater as the head of the Army of the Ohio. He also led the Army of the Potomac for a short period of time, relieving his friend, General George B. McClellan. As the new commander, Burnside failed at the December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg.

He was transferred to the Western Theater and as head of the Army of the Ohio, contributed to Union efforts in Tennessee.
