Because Chows are the dogs most known as having black or black-spotted tongues, some mistakenly assume that a dog with a black tongue is a Chow or at least part Chow. In reality, there are many other breeds of dog that may have black spots on their tongue or gums. The Chinese Shar-Pei (commonly r…eferred to as the 'wrinkle dog') is another breed that is known to have a black tongue. Many breeds are known to have tongues or gums with black spots, prompting less knowledgeable owners to think they may have a dog that is of mixed parentage rather than a purebred. The following breeds are ALL known to have black tongues: Airedale (If purebred, they only have black spots, not an entirely black tongue and it does relate to Chow Chow bloodlines in the breed development in this situation ) Akita Australian Cattle Dog Australian Shepherd Belgian Sheepdog Belgian Malinois Bichon Frise Bull Mastiff Cairn Terrier Collie Cocker Spaniel Dalmation Doberman Pinscher English Setter German Shepherd Dog Golden Retriever Gordon Setter Great Pyranees Irish Setter Keeshond Labrador Retriever Mastiff Newfoundland Pomeranian Pug Rhodesian Ridgeback Rottweiler Siberian Husky Tibetan Mastiff as well as several other breeds that are less well known. The black spots on a dog's tongue are a result of excessive pigment, much the same as freckles or birthmarks in people. ( Full Answer )

Prednisone, which is a steroid, is commonly used by vets in treating a number of skin disorders, including hot spots. But only administer it to your dog if your vet has instructed you to do so. If you aren't sure if it is a hot spot, then the dog needs to be examined in order to be properly diagnose…d and treated.. Also, give this medication exactly as prescribed by your vet. The dosage of this med is gradually decreased over the course of the treatment. To give your dog this med, and then stop giving it abruptly, without decreasing the dosage gradually, can cause serious health risks for the dog. ( Full Answer )

A lot of dogs develop a different coat pattern as they grow. Dalmatian pups, however, are allways born with no spots and develop them as they grow up.
Some of the breeds that have distinctive markings on the legs that you might call freckles are many of the hunting dogs, like the various pointers and setters. These markings are called "tick markings" and some good examples are the German Shorthaired Pointers and Bluetick Coonhounds. Breeds that… can have other types of spots on their legs include Australian Shepherds; Dalmatians; Beagles; and Basset Hounds for a few that come to mind first as examples. Look at the breed pictures at the AKC site (by way of the related link below) for more possibilities of the types of markings you are describing. ( Full Answer )
Chinese Chow Chow's and Shar Pei's are the only Kennel Club recognised breeds that have black (or blue) tongues.
From reasearch: Those black spots on a dog's tongue are merely deposits of extra pigment. They're very common; more than 30 pure breeds have members with spotted tongues, and they can occur with any mixed-breed dog. It doesn't necessarily mean there's Chow Chow dog in their bloodline, though that's …a popular notion. (There's a good chance that dogs with spotted tongues have darker spots on their skin too, underneath their fur.) The spots can be "stable" (remain the same throughout the dog's life), or they can fluctuate, becoming more or less pronounced over time. In rare cases, "black tongue" can be the symptom of an illness, especially if it appears suddenly. If you have any concerns, you should have a vet check your dog. From personal experience: I currently have two pups that are the offspring of a Rottweiler/Lab mix dad and a Labradoodle mom. Neither parent has spots on their tongues, but one of the pups was born with a solid black tongue, and the other has spots on his tongue that started out tiny, and are spreading as he grows. The Pug dog is most known for doing this. It has a squashed like face which can make breathing sometimes difficult especially in summer. Black spots on the tongue usually indicate normal color mutations in healthy dogs. Sometimes such a mark is indicative of a completely black ancestor; one often sees such discolorations in Golden Retrievers.
