This question depends largely on Age of vehicle, Auto or manual, Diesel or Petrol. The most obvious to me would be a more modern Cherokee, Petrol and auto box, Suggesting that the CPU has picked up a major fault. Possibly the gearbox but without looking or full description of symptoms it would be very hard to tell.
I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee 6 cyl. and my Jeep would stall sometimes when at a red light or sometimes wouldn't start at all. I had this problem for a few weeks and couldn't figure out what the problem was. I then checked online and a multiple of answers were made known to me. The first one was - - faultly crank sensor, this could be cause be vibration over time - faulty gas pump A new crank sensor is about 50 bucks. I changed mine and it made a world of difference. When starting my Jeep I noticed it would fire right up and wouldn't let my engine turn endlessly before starting. Also my Jeep stopped stalling wherever and whenever. I aslo had my gas pump checked by a mechanic using a gas pressure gauge hooked up to the fuel rail underneath the hood. I had this checked due to the fact that I noticed my Jeep would jerk at certain speeds and would sometimes lose power going up hill. Upon checking my gas pressure my machanic come to the conclusion that my gas pump was shot. Upon changing my pump everything seemed to be okay after. I now have lots of power and my Jeep runs perfectly. I hope this helps all of you who have Jeep Cherokees... Dave
grand Cherokee stalls or dies out. with no codes
1998 and earlier.......
1) Check your connections at the ECU (ENGINE CONTROL UNIT) may be called
the PCU (POWERTRAIN CONTROL UNIT) on the passenger side firewall.
On 1998 and earlier the 3 plugs sometimes get a bad or loose connection.
It is ususally the one closest to the fender, unplug and spray the connections with a cleaner
and replug. You may even have to wrap a zip tie around the back of the ECU and zip it to
keep the plug in tight..... Take it for a test drive..
2) This may also be the problem... It is going to sound screwy, but there are torx screws
on the 1998 and earlier ECU. Back them out about a 1/3 of a turn. The screws are too long
and are causing some kind of short in the connection. Take it for a test drive.....
3) FOR 1999 AND LATER (this was my problem)
I had same problem.... 87,000 2000 grand Cherokee 4.7l
when i let off the gas it might stall. happens 1 to 4 times a day.
THERE WERE NO ENGINE CODES
I tried all the above but no luck...
So far I have (not sure if i remember the prices right)
- replaced the crank shaft sensor - it stopped stalling for 3 days $45
- cleaned the throttle boddy free
- replaced the throttle position sensor $72
- replaced the idle air control sensor $132
- replaced the map manafold airflow sensor $125
no luck it is still stalling. ...
by the way I did all the work myself. it was about 30 minutes for most parts.
I finally ordered a rebuilt ecu or pcu engine control unit. they program in the vin, mileage,
and part nbr so your grand Cherokee will recognize it. $185 (rebuilt - off eBay)
IT CAME AND THAT SEEMS TO HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM.....
IT HAS BEEN A WEEK.... SO FAR SO GOOD
There could be a few reasons why a 2000 Jeep Cherokee would stall in stopped traffic. There could be a fuel line clogged or there could be a bad spark plug.
If any vehicle stalls while driving it should be seen by a mechanic soon. It can be the a issues with the computer, ignition, or fuel.
When my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee did that I replaced the fuel filter. However, another thing that can cause that (believe it or not) is a bad battery
# Idle speed incorrect # Fuel filter clogged and/or water and impurities in fuel system # Faulty plugs and/or wires # Vacuum leak
Your best bet here is going to be to take your Jeep to an autoparts store and have them check the computer. Then you will know just whats wrong.
have you had a throttle body service?
Yes
I had that same exact problem with a 1995 Jeep Cherokee, and it was indeed a bad oxygen sensor. Relatively cheap repair too.
check for a crack in the distributor cap
Check the operating mechanism
Had a similar problem with 94 gcl. Turned out to be the viscus coupler. Once replaced problem was gone. Very expensive.
Having the speedometer jump and the engine stall in the 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo could be a problem with the idle and the transmission. The transmission slipping can cause the speedometer to jump.
usually the factory alarm
Diagnostic code 43 in the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee refers to an issue with the distributor. This often causes the Jeep to stall at operating temperature.
bad fuel filter
There are a couple of reasons why a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee may stall in any weather condition. One reason could be the ECU computer could be going bad.
Yes

The problem is with the coil or coil pack. There is a large bolt through the coil that goes into the block it will sometimes get hot when it does the engine will not run.
depends on the noise it makes when it stalls...could be vacuum leak, map sensor, fuel injectors, fuel pump, clogged air intake. have someone else start the engine as you look and listen for any strange noises as the engine stalls.
does my 1996 pontiac ga stall out in park
check for a crack in the distributor cap
Check the operating mechanism
