I heard on a reputable tv news report a couple years ago that if you overfill your tank , you know continue to fill after the nozzle automatically shuts off, to top off or round up that extra dollar, that the extra amount of gas causes the float to go above and beyond what the manufacturer designed and has the system calibrated for, overextending it , which can cause it to stick altogether in that position or can give faulty readings and stick intermittently, or cease to function. The repairs are costly because this all goes on inside the tank, and as they are read by computer, you are talking extra money to have recalibrated. It can also make a check engine light come on.
Your 1992 Jeep Wrangler faulty gas level sensor will cause the gas gauge to not function properly. The gas level sending unit may have a bad ground wire.
First check the fuse for the 2003 Cavalier gauge. Next check the fuel sending unit in the fuel tank to insure that its working properly. Check the gauge next, then the wiring for the system. One of these units is causing your gauge to not work.
A common cause for a gas gauge to stop working in a 1994 Ford Aspire is a defective fuel gauge. Lose wiring in the dash is another cause.
There are several reasons why a gas gauge could stop working. A short in the wire from the sending unit could be the culprit. The computer that controls the dashboard gauges could be going out.
Wiring or sender unit in the tank.

There are several things that can cause your 2000 Hyundai gas gauge not to work. The most common cause is a loose or corroded ground wire.
one of gm's many flaws. was recalled 4 times a few years ago, but never fixed.
what is the gas milege of a 200 cavalier?

A faulty fuel gauge sending unit in the fuel tank could cause that.
A broken or disconnected ground wire can cause your odometer to freeze and your gas gauge to fluctuate up and down. A computer problem could cause the odometer to freeze but is very unlikely to cause the gas gauge to fluctuate.
