Teens, like everyone, are safest to watch their food intake (more about what they're eating than how much) and get exercise. Try to avoid processed and fatty foods. Takeaways like McDonalds, KFC, Burger King are never going to help anyone lose weight or have nice skin as they are full of saturated fat (Saturated and Trans fat are the nasties).

You could try swapping to Low GI foods so that you feel full for longer after you've eaten which means you're less likely to snack and eat more. Low GI is like the opposite of "Empty Calories". Low GI is about avoiding processed foods, eating whole grains, the right vegetables and fruit... try using the glycemic index online to find out what foods are good to eat.

Also a trick we were taught at uni. Eat your protein first (ie meat, eggs, mushrooms, dairy - be careful of cheese as it's high in saturated fat) as this is what makes you feel full and your body will focus on extracting what it needs from the protein and not so much on the sugar that follows in other foods. Oh, Alcohol is full of empty calories so if you're going to drink try vodka and a squirt of lime, not coke (diet drinks are terrible for you), lemonade or juice as they're full of sugar.
