The best thing to do in order not to lose computer files is to back them up. There are a few options available. Files can be backed up online through a 'cloud' service such as Google's drive tool, Dropbox, or Microsoft's SkyDrive which are free and often include 5 gigabyte of space to store your files. The other option is to rent a cloud storage from companies such as Amazon's Cloud Drive and Cubby for a minimul monthly fee. Bitcasa gives you unlimited storage for only $10 per month. The third option would be to buy a seperate external drive or a flash drive and keep your valuable files on these.

Why do Word documents have file names?

Everything you save on a computer has a file name. The web page you are looking at right now is stored as a file - both on the machine that hosts it, as well as on your machine as a .temp file. If the Word document you are working on wasn't stored as a file with its own file name, you would not be able to retrieve it. If you had a power outage or accidentally turned off your computer, you would lose all of your work.

How does computer file recovery work?

File recovery software is able to work because when files are deleted, they aren't actually deleted from the hard drive. The deleted files are put into free space on the computer, so as long as there have not been files saved over them they are retrievable by file recovery software that can access this free space.
