Cardio exercise is short for cardiovascular. Cardio exercise is any exercise that stresses your cardiovascular system, which are the exercises that get you breathing more rapidly.

All cardio exercise is aerobic exercise. However, not all aerobic exercises will give cardiovascular benefits. For example, walking is aerobic. Usually, types of exercises are exercise specific. In other words, if you want to be a better pole vaulter, practice pole vaulting. If you want to be a better sprinter, practice sprinting. And so on. To improve cardiorespiratory endurance you need to practice endurance exercise for the appropriate muscles and improve cardiovascular efficiency. For example, to improve your muscles for running long distances, practice running long distances. To improve cardiovascular efficiency, increase your VOxmax by doing high intensity interval training.
