Cod has always been the most prolific species living on the Grand Banks. When John Cabot returned to Europe with the news of a new source of fish, fleets of French, English, Portuguese, Spanish and Basque fishermen began fishing the waters off Newfoundland. By the 1700s, cod fishing became more and more controlled by Newfoundlander Meanwhile, offshore fishing by large European and Asian consortiums continued as eventually large refrigerator ships were developed to freeze the catch on-site, allowing weeks of continual fishing to occur.

n 1977, Canada extended its control over coastal waters from 12 to 200 nautical miles to discourage overfishing by huge offshore ships from Europe and Asia. Inshore fishers expressed concern over declining cod catches in 1985. In July 1992, 30,000 Newfoundlanders were put out of work when the northern cod harvest was closed. By 2003, all Canadian cod fishing was banned.

Is cod fishing allowed off the coast of Newfoundland?

No. They banned it in 1992 when the cod fish was over-fished for hundreds of years. It re-opened in 1999 and only allowed some people to fish it, but the cod fish numbers still grew smaller, so they banned it again in 2002

Why did Canada extend its territorial waters out to 200 nautical miles in the 1970's?

What is the benefit of Canada's government preventing fishing within 200 nautical miles of Canada?

the reason why the have a 200 mile zone (EEZ) is so the country can have control of the fishing industry around that country. The first country Canada to create the EEZ as it had a mortitorum or ban on Cod fishing in the Grand banks. They could only control fishermen in they own country, so they decide to make a zone where only they could fish.
