The fact that Mexico never accepted Texas independence. They saw Texas as a rebel province, as much as present-day China sees Taiwan.

When Texas split up from Mexico in 1836, they captured the Mexican president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto; but according to Mexican constitution a captured president was in no position to accept any demands from a foreign country; much less if those negotiations weren't ratified by the Mexican congress.

This dispute was finally solved when Texas entered the Union in 1845, sparking the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). After Mexico was defeated, they had to cease any attempt on reclaiming Texas as part of the Guadalupe-Hidalgo treaty.
