In 1955, Egypt under the rule of Premier Abdel Nasser was a major leader in the Arab world. He headed the nationalism movement in the Middle East. Due to the political situation at the time, he was unable secure weapons from the United States. He therefore turned to the USSR and established trade agreements that sent cotton to the USSR who in turn supplied Egypt with planes, tanks, and other military equipment. Along with this came Soviet technicians to help the Egyptians learn the operation of this military hardware.
In 1956, Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal which was owned by French & British investors. He hoped that revenue from the canal would finance the building of a much needed dam, the Aswan Dam. That effort failed so once again the Soviets helped Nasser to finance the dam and again supplied Egypt with technicians for the building project.
The Soviet Union hoped to expand its sphere of influence in the Middle East. The Soviets knew that because of Islam, communism would never take hold there. However, with that said, they sought influence there and wanted to remove Western influence.
Egypt's peak of influence was in the New Kingdom.
From 1882 until 1922. Although British influence extends back to the defeat of the French in 1801 until the loss of ownership of the Suez canal in 1956 when Soviet and US influence took over.
They agreed on Egypt.

It did not provide military report during the conflict, but it had sold arms to Egypt prior to the conflict when the USA had refused to do so. The Soviet Union provided however forceful political support to Egypt. The reason for this was that the Soviet Union at this time was trying to expand its political influence in the Arab world. After the USSR's succesful intervention (the USA had by the way fought equally hard to stop the English/French invasion by putting strong political pressure on these countries) the Soviet Union did indeed gain much clout in the Arab world.
