The U.S. began work on making nuclear bombs (atomic bombs) in WW2 out of fear that Nazi Germany might be working on them and use them to win the war, we needed to 1) determine if they could be made and 2) if they could try to make them before Nazi Germany did.

After WW2 the U.S. continued making them and began work on hydrogen bombs out of fear that the USSR might attack the U.S. and/or Western Europe.
