Best Answer

Automobiles and Airlines are the two main reasons that passenger rail travel declined in popularity in America. Bus travel (e.g. Greyhound Lines) would also have an impact.

Note that rail travel is still quite popular in Europe, Japan, etc.

Vastly improved technology and infrastructure of road systems and greatly improved automobile and aeroplane design and manufacture giving rise to safer faster, more efficient and comfortable travel and transportatioin.

Governmental decisions and funding are instrumental in all such national and international developments and there are great differences in the use and maintenance of road and rail infrastructures across the world.
