I had the same probl;em on my 1996 SL1. I found the bypass tube from the head to the reservoir was clogged and would not let water return to the reservoir. When I unclogged the line the overheating went away. I also had replaced the water pump and thermostat before without any luck. The clogged line was the culprit.
could be your thermostat is stuck or perhaps and needs to be replaced.
You may have the thermostat in backwards. The spring side of the thermostat faces into the engine.
Overheating can be caused by the thermostat, plugged radiator or a faulty headgasket. On the Saturn S-Series, overheating is more commonly caused by a missing air dam (if you mostly drive in town), or a failed cooling fan.
Thermostat is stuck closed.
There are a couple of reasons why a 1996 Cadillac Seville SLS may overheat. The coolant may be low or the thermostat needs to be replaced.
If it's just occasionally, it may be a sticky thermostat.
Check your oil and see if it's milky. If it is then it's leaking inside. Does it steam out of the tailpipe? If it does you have a bad head or head gasket. have you replaced the thermostat? if you haven't, do that first, it may be stuck closed.
generally if an engine overheats, but then does not overheat when heater is turned on, is a good indication that the engine thermostat is stuck and needs replacing
A bad water pump or thermostat can cause an engine to overheat. A plugged (clogged) radiator or heater core may also cause an engine to overheat.
The thermostat may be installed backwards
start with checking thermostat
a. blown headgasket. b. defective thermostat. c. defective radiator. d. no oil, no coolant.
