Low Octane fuel will cause pinging. It should not last for more than a few seconds then the Knock sensors should signal the PCM to retard timing. You should ensure that you use ONLY "top tier" Gasolines. If it continues to ping then you must use a higher Octane fuel. Please be aware that Top Tier and higher octane are two different concepts. If it still continues to ping (for more than a few seconds) then you must take it in and find out why the knock sensors are not working. The other noise that happens on cold starts is a diesel sound and should go away after the engine warms up. Early 2002 Models have a TSB that refers to this and sleeve failure.
