I just replaced the heater core in my 96 Grand Am SE 2.4 and it is not easy. The new heater core's are metal all the way so you won't have to worry about it cracking again. Good Luck! The answer is "poor maintenance". If conventional antifreeze is used it must be changed every 24 months ... the new coolants can go 60 months. Why change your antifreeze if it tests good for 40 below? The PH level decreases the older the coolant gets, in other words the older the antifreeze, the more acidic it becomes. It corrodes your copper and aluminum parts from the inside out. So if your local technician only tests for the freeze point of your antifreeze ... time to find a knowledgable technician!! regards .... larrie e.
