The most likely cause is improper ignition timing. In many cases the timing can be adjusted by rotating a distributor. Many older motors develop excessive wear to the timing gears, chains belts or any of the moving parts, and one day, usually while starting, they "JUMP" time as it is called. Also, when this happens, trying to adjust the timing usually won't be successful. Time for a new yiming set. Hope this helps.

What causes a 1973 Pontiac 350 engine to backfire through the exhaust?

A large backfire is most likely caused by a bad spark plug or plug wire. Unburned air and fuel pumped into the exhaust will often be ignited by the other cylinders still burning exhaust gases. Also check your ignition timing, if it is late and you have a rich mixture you can get a backfire. An exhaust leak will let air enter the exhaust under deceleration and cause a "popping" sound.

Why is your 92 F150 5.0 backfiring through carburetor?

A backfire is caused by many different things. Using the wrong grade fuel will cause a backfire, as the engine's compression ratio is usually too high and will detonate the Air/Fuel mixture, causing a backfire. It can also be caused by advanced or retarded timing. Advanced timing will cause a backfire through the intake, as the spark occurs too early and ignites the Air/Fuel mixture before the intake valve is closed. Retarded timing causes a backfire through the exhaust as the spark occurs after the exhaust valve has opened. Your problem seems to be advanced timing. A backfire is caused by many different things. What causes your 289 Ford Falcon to backfire?

ok, is the backfire through the exhaust or inlet manifold? if its through the exhaust it means ur mixture is to rich, causing unburnt fuel to ignite in exhuast, if through inlet it is a lean backfire, either way if carby in good condition it sounds like mixture screw, to adjust, start car and get to operating temp, wind mixture screw in till car almost stalls then back out 1 and a quarter turns, that's a static point to go from. good luck

first and best thing to find out is if your running rich or not your fuel to air ratio might not be just right. check your oxygen sensor and do a full tune up.
