Do you mean tidal waves? The tides are caused by the gravity of the moon pulling and "releasing" the ocean's water, tidal waves are the shockwaves from underground seismic activity which are driven upwards as they get closer to the coast by the increasingly shallow water.

Basically a big earth quake, but under water.

There are no tides in rivers, or in lakes. Tidal effects only show up in LARGE (ocean-sized) bodies of water, or seas and bays connected to them.

The only effect you might ever notice would be at the mouth of a river that flows into the ocean; in that case, rising tides can cause backflows that push salt water into the mouth of a river.

As the moon orbits Earth, it's gravitational pull actually raises and lowers the sea level. If the moon is overhead. you are probably at high tide, while the moon not in the sky means the tide will be lower.

The reason is the combined gravitational pull of the sun and the moon against the earth's oceans. Areas in the ocean that have more pull bulge outwards, thus creating high tide.

What are tides that cause flooding called?

In some areas, there is something known as "extreme tides"or "spring tides" where the low tides are really low and the high tides are really high. In some areas, these spring tides can be so extreme that the tide difference is several feet. When the high tide comes in from these extreme spring tides, they quickly come in, at several meters per sec, and flood the entire beach area. Tourists that come to places like these are usually unaware of the dangers associated with extreme spring tides and drown when they are on the beach when the tide comes in. Signs are posted at these beaches to warn visitors of these dangerous extreme spring tides.
