There may be many causes, but one may be hook worms, especially if one has a dog. The infection passes from animal to human and can account for these symptoms. Have the animal checked, and if it is infected, see your physician. A possible cause for itching in the peri-rectal area (at any age) may be yeast infection. Limiting or eliminating eating bread may stop the itching. Our tolerances for a variety of behaviors and phenomena change with aging. Some people are fine with cat dander and then one day they go into anaphylactic shock the moment they come into contact with a cat. So too with food Allergies. You can always go to dermatologist for an answer that might be definitive (or maybe not) or do some experimentation on your body when the symptoms aren't critical.
