A program called Windows Explorer, controls the Icons, The taskbar, and the windows, such as folders, My Documents, and My Computer. Your computer starts up more essential things first, then loads up Windows Explorer (Windows Explorer should not be confused with internet Explorer.)

If you plug in a camera, it depends on whether the camera has a file system that can be read by the computer. If you plug in a printer, it will appear in the system prefs under printers. It won't appear on the desktop. If a hard drive or memory card or thumb drive has a readable file structure, it will appear on the desktop. So, what happens depends on what is connected to the system. Just plain old thumb drives usually work fine in any computer.
