These symptoms indicate a bad neutral safety switch, which also goes by a few other names: Manual lever position sensor (MLPS), transmission range sensor (TRS), and according to at least one person, the shift sensor.
Easy, $25 dollar fix.

defectit's the same thing if you go to buy the new part you ask for a shift sensor. and shift sensor is what it will say on the box or if you go to a you pull it.(It's the neutral safety switch)
it's actually the shift sensor, it's located on top of the tranny with 3 bolts, 2x8mm and 1x10 or 12mm bolt depends on age, and one plug. if you change it yourself make sure the parking brake is on and put it into neutral before removing anything. its only a minute job
