When your tires squeal at a low speed it can mean a number of things. The tread on your tires may be almost gone or you may have low tire pressure.
How much tread on tire before replacing?
A good test is to take a penny and place it in the tread grove with the head of Lincoln facing down. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head you need new tires. If the tread is worn more on the inside or outside you need a front end alignment. If the tread is worn on the outer edges you are running the tires with too low air pressure. Worn in the center, too much air pressure. Of course dry rotted and cracked tires need replacing no matter the tread depth.

There's several types of tire wear, I'll list a few of the most common: Low tread inside outside with good tread in the center = Too low air pressure. Low tread in the center with good tread on outer edges = Too high air pressure. Heavy wear on inside of both tires = camber and/or toe adjustment out. Heavy wear on outside of both tires = camber and/or tow adjustment out. Feathering or choppy wear = poor shocks and/or toe out of adjustment and/or unbalanced tire/s.

Check your tread. Most of the time low tread will do that. Your car's tires dont have to be bald to start sliding. If you used any cleaner on your tread, that could be the issue too. I put black cleaner to make the tires look brand new, and that was a bad mistake. I had to end up getting new tires because they were so treacherous in rain. How do you know when you need new car tires?
First of all look at all of your tires. Do you see any bulges on the sidewalls? If yes, this is a good reason to replace the tire. If they are bald (no tread left) then they of course need to be replaced. However, if they look fine but with low tread you will need to determine how soon to replace them. The old rule of thumb was to insert a penny vertically into a groove in the middle of the tread. The lip on the penny is roughly 1/32 of an inch, the replacement point. Now most tires have tread wear indicators made into them. If you look closely at the sidewall right where it meets the tread you should see little triangles spaced around the tire. Follow this indicator onto the tread of the tire. You will notice a line in the grooves of the tread. This is the tread wear indicator. If this line is even with the tread on your tire then you need to replace them.Ans 2 - If the tread depth is less than 1/8 of an inch (or 3 millimeters) then it's wise to replace them . Tires down to 1/32 inch (as quoted above ) will NOT cope with a wet road surface and are dangerous to you and others.
