From crack of morning, Amish youths do chores before breakfast, like bring in wood and fill hot wood stoves, stumbling in dark feeding livestock and milking cows, to preparing the first meal of the day.

Then the boys go out and plow fields with 4 to 6-horse teams, handle wood cutting equipment without any safety equipment, to hamming away on building several stories up without a harness.

The girls are handling heavy pans, on their knees scrubbing floors, and preparing the next meal over hot stoves.

They do attend school up to 8th grade, but for shorter hours, so they can go right back to work.

The boys feed animals again and clean stalls, they plant crops on their knees, they chop wood with axes.

The girls make quilts, saw clothes, and turn butter, and even take care of their baby siblings.
