∙ 13y agoJohn Winthrop and the other Puritans founded Massachusetts Bay Colony and made the statement, "We shall be as a City Upon a Hill". They meant to be a model city or Christian goodness. Social reciprocity was key to their society and they did believe in a separation of church and state, but it was minimal. Ministers could not hold political positions and they could be hired or fired at will, but the meeting house held both political meetings and religious meetings. Only 2/5s of the population could vote as you had to be a visible saint(have undergone conversion by declaring that god had saved your soul to a council of elders). The city upon a hill failed for a number of reasons, in 1636 Anne Hutchinson led a group of dissenters against it and in 1640 the ideals were gone as other settlers came with a lust for gold and second and third generations did not want to undergo conversion.
