The capital of Mexican Texas (Coahuila y Tejas) was Saltillo.

The Republic of Texas had several capitals, as it was relocated during the war with Mexico. The first was Washington-on-the-Brazos, where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed at the Convention of 1836. Harrisburg (the provisional capital) was again the capital until it was burned by the Mexican army. The interim president of the Republic established a capital at Velasco, but the first legislature was convened in 1836 in Columbia. The final location was Austin (renamed from Waterloo in honor of Stephen F. Austin), which became the capital of the state of Texas in 1846.
