Most plants, due to photosynthesis, grow best under sunlight or artificial uv light like from flourescent light. You can play all day to find other light sources and colors but in simple terms, give a plant what it needs and it can amaze you.

1. Plants DO NOT grow best in green light. The pigment chlorophyll (both chlorophyll-a and chlorophyll-b) is green and reflects green light - that's why most leaves appear green.

2. Plants respond best to both red and blue light, both are required to ensure stable, strong plant growth.

3. Evolution, and the earths early atmospheric conditions (composition) probably grave rise to plants (and most other autotrophs) being best suited to growth under red and blue light wavelength's. The chemical composition of the atmosphere varied over time filtering out certain wavelengths of light (and favouring others), autotrophic organisms adapted to these changes to which have now influenced the way that they now look and function.

Plants is a very general term. Certain plants, e.g. houseplants, do not do well, in fact burn, in intense sunlight. Other outdoor crops develop well with intense light. Most plants will do best with full spectrum lighting (white). White light comes in many flavors from the 130V incandescent bulb running on 115V at 2000K (refer to Kelvin scale for CIE coordinates of white light) through flourescent light at 4500K but respond best to morning sunlight of 7000-10000K which is a bluish-white color often found outdoors from 8-10AM. While all these work, specialized 7000K metal halide bulbs with a CRI of 85 or better will do best for most outdoor plants, however too much of a good thing can kill some species. Plants need to sleep like humans do for optimal photosynthesis and growth. Light intensity should never raise the temperature of the plant unless it is a hearty species that likes direct sunlight. Even these should not receive so much exposure as to become warm or they will dry out and die. for general houseplants, a 4500K kitchen light with 4 ea 48" flourescent tubes should work fine if left on a few extra hours and the plants are on the kitchen counter. for dedicated hydroponic growing of delicate species such as orchids a low wattage metal halide bulb with 10 foot separation would need to be programmed to simulate the natural environment of the plant, including day length and season. Metal Halide lamps at 7000K are efficient and available in wattages from 50-1000w. There is also a new 100W led array (100 ea 1W led chips bonded to the same substrate about 1 sq inch). The led array has about the same light output as a 500W halogen worklight, except a higher color temperature. As these lights were just introduced they have not been tried for grow lights yet. One note of caution for growing plants - LEDs are wonderfully efficient for making light, but they lack the IR and UV of normal sunlight, and as such may not be optimal for photosynthesis. Obviously getting 500W of light from a 100W source means you are getting something for nothing, but actual testing shows that the 500W halogen worklight is just putting 92% of its energy input into NON-visable IR (but still useful to grow plants) while the LEDs have almost zero IR and UV. This makes LED lighting highly questionable for a substitute for the sun. Another great option would be a solar extension which doesn't have a light at all, but rather a dome on the roof and a silvered inside tube that carries the light collected on the roof down into a luminare indoors. It is natural light carried inside and would be ideal for most plants unless you are in the arctic circle and have 6 months of darkness. Good luck

Blue and purple, but it is still best for your plant to grow under natural sunlight.

Why does the color of a light affect a plants growth or does it?

The color of a light does affect a plants growth. Plants absorb certain colors of light better than others, and, essentially, the more light a plant can absorb, the more it can grow.
