The abolitionist and women's-rights advocate Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) suggested at one point in his life that his biological father may have been white, one of his mother's slaveowners in Maryland. However, this was never officially determined and Douglass did not continue to refer to it. Douglass was separated from his mother, Harriet Bailey, and raised by his maternal grandmother.
