While most recent writings about Robin Hood place him in Sherwood Forest, which is in Nottinghamshire, the earliest sources of the legend, which are ballads dated before 1450, place him in Barnsdale Heath, which is in Yorkshire, about fifty miles north of Sherwood Forest. I follow the ballads in my novel The Robin Hood Chronicles.

Robin Hood's merry men were said to wear Lincoln green, a shade of green similar to that of the forest leaves. This helped them to blend in with the forest surroundings while they were hiding or ambushing their enemies.

∙ 12y agoRobin Hood met his men mostly by chance. For example he met Little John while crossing a river on a fallen tree. Little John was coming the opposite way and .... well its a long story.
Although sometimes he met them by design. In the oldest ballads Friar Tuck was a warrior monk (in the olden days friars were free to find what ever employment they liked) and was entrusted with keeping the law in one corner of Sherwood Forest. Robin went to him on purpose.
