Seven Up was first formulate in 1929 by Charles Lieper Grigg the founder of The Howdy Company in St. Louis, Missouri. Originally, as with most early soft drinks, it was sold as a patent medicine. Containing lithium citrate until 1959, it was marketed first under the name "Bib Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda." The soft drink company was sold to Westinghouse in 1969,Phillip Morris in 1978, to the investment company Hicks & Haas in 1986. Dr. Pepper and 7Up merged in 1988 and both were purchased by Cadbury Schweppes in 1995. Finally, 7Up/Dr. Pepper were spun off in 2008.
