The compound used in older refrigerators was Chloroflurocarbons which is commomly called as CFC's and the recent ones uses compounds of florides and Hydroflurocarbons which is commonly called as HFC's. CFC's are replaced by HFC's due to their reactivity with the Ozone layer and causes depletion.
