The fact that haunted Southern slave owners and Southern politicians was the real possibility that the US expansion westward, would create a large majority of non slave States and Territories. To them, such a large majority could bring about the ending of slavery, an institution they believed was necessary for economic reasons. Taken with such a calamity it only helped secessionists succeed with the idea of an independent South. Whether a war could develop from that was still a question mark.
