Best Answer

Joseph Stalin, during his regime as Premier of the Soviet Union, engaged the Soviet Union in World War II against Nazi Germany. Throughout the war, the Soviets were forced to fight the best and brightest German soldiers and officers with the most advanced weaponry in the German Army and Air Force while they themselves had ammunition shortages, outdated technology, and bad morale. The Soviets pushed the Germans back to Berlin and ultimately won their part of WWII in the European Theater of Operations through sheer determination and force of numbers. Soviet Casualties from WWII number around 25 million with about 1 million deaths at the Battle of Stalingrad alone. Also during Joseph Stalin's regime, the Soviet Union was involved in the Cold War and all the smaller wars and skirmishes that resulted from that.
